09 Oct Fennel: A Hidden Gem
Little did I know when I booked a table for myself and himself in my local restaurant, Fennel, that I would walk out the door hours later following one of the best dining experiences of my life!
The restaurant which opened in April 2016, is home to Chef Peter Clifford who learnt his craft from his father, renowned Michelin star chef Michael Clifford. It’s promise was to “bring something a little different to Drumcondra” and I can confirm that this is exactly what it does.
While serving simple, casual, modern food during the day, using the best of ingredients served in chilled atmosphere, dinner pushes the boat out a little more. These dishes include more styled food aimed to give the customer more of a culinary experience.
I was a little nervous when booking a table here, as the building has been home to many failed businesses in the past. However, I was not going to let that stand in my way of (what I was promised) near Michelin star quality food.
For starters I had Scallops with a side of pumpkin puree and hazelnut, followed by Duck, wild blackberries and beetroot. This was the dish of the table. It was a generous portion and had very little fat – cooked medium/rare it was perfect. Finally, I devoured a chestnut mousse and pear dessert and as someone who rarely goes for dessert, it certainly made me think twice about ordering one in future!
Each of the dishes were presented so artistically. We were so impressed by the standard. Unfortunately, I was unable to take a photo – so you’ll just have to test it out for yourself. I promise you won’t be disappointed.
